Biography

Mickey Champion (1925–2014), born Mildred Sallier in Lake Charles, Louisiana, was an American blues and R&B singer. Champion was raised by her aunts and first performed at the Lake Charles Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1945, Champion moved to Los Angeles and began performing in nightclubs as “Little Mickey Champion”. Champion performed without microphones and collaborated with artists including T-Bone Walker, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and Ray Charles. In the mid-1950s, Champion married bandleader Roy Milton and recorded several tracks with him. After focusing on her family during the 1960s, Champion returned to recording in 1999. Her discography includes the albums I'm Your Living Legend (1999), Live at the Living Room (1999), and What You Want (2002). Champion died in Los Angeles on November 24, 2014, following several strokes.
