Michiko Hamamura, born October 3, 1937, in Kagoshima, is a Japanese singer who rose to fame during the late-1950s calypso boom. After moving to Tokyo following middle school, she worked as a high school model before being selected by Victor Entertainment to cover Harry Belafonteâs âBanana Boatâ as a promotional figure dubbed the âCalypso Girl.â Despite having no formal singing background, her image and charisma matched the tropical style, and she debuted in 1957. Her version of âBanana Boatâ became a major hit, reportedly selling over 300,000 copies and later reaching million-seller status. Her bold âcalypso styleââbleached long hair and dramatic makeupâmade her a media sensation, and she appeared on the 8th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen that year. Following additional calypso releases and even recording sessions in the United States, her popularity declined as the trend faded. She retired in 1963 after marriage but returned to acting and singing in the 1970s, scoring another hit with âKiiroi Shirtâ. On April 9, 2026, her recording of "Mama Look A Boo Boo" was reissued through PANJA RECORDS as part of the âJamaican Beat KayÅ â Calypso Editionâ revival series, reintroducing her distinctive 1957 and 1965-era recordings to new audiences.
