Hikaru GENJI, a Japanese male idol group formed in 1987 under Johnny & Associates, was initially composed of seven members: Kohji Uchiumi, Mikio Osawa, Kazumi Morohoshi, Hiroyuki SatÅ, Junichi Yamamoto, Akira Akasaka, and Atsuhiro SatÅ. The group's name was inspired by the character Hikaru Genji from the classic Japanese novel The Tale of Genji. Their debut single "STAR LIGHT" was released in August 1987, marking their entry into the music industry. In 1988, they achieved significant chart success with their single "Paradise Ginga", which won the Japan Record Award at the 30th Japan Record Awards. This victory made them the second artist from Johnny & Associates to receive this honour. The group's various albums, including å
GENJI (1988) and Hey! Say! (1989), further solidified their popularity. In 1994, after releasing several successful singles and albums, Mikio Osawa and Hiroyuki SatÅ left the group, leading to a reformation under the name Hikaru Genji SUPER 5. This iteration released three singles and one album before disbanding in 1995. Notable posthumous releases include å
GENJIãã¹ã (2001), which compiled their greatest hits. The group's impact on Japanese pop culture is evident through their chart-topping singles and enduring influence on the idol genre.
