Biography

Michel Roques (Michel André Guy Roques), born 15 April 1936 in Toulouse, France, was a tenor saxophonist, clarinettist and flautist who taught himself jazz after losing sight at age fifteen. In 1960, he moved to Paris, becoming a sideman for Claude Guilhot, Dominique Chanson and Georges Arvanitas. He released Jazz on Bach in 1965 with René Urtreger, Jacques Thollot and Michel Gaudry, and formed a trio in 1966 who released seven albums, including Safari, which earned him the Prix Django Reinhardt and a Solistenpreis at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969. The trio performed at Paris venues and toured Europe. In the 1980s, he returned to Toulouse for duo work with Siegfried Kessler and Roger Guérin. Michel Roques died on 29 March 2007 in Orsay.
