Michael Woodman is a British neo-progressive rock musician celebrated for his intricate songwriting, theatrical vocal delivery, and a genre-blurring approach that melds art rock, psychedelia, and experimental pop. He is best known as the frontman and guitarist of the avant-prog band Thumpermonkey, which began as his solo project in 2001 before evolving into a full band by 2005. Thumpermonkey has garnered acclaim for its eclectic sound, described as a fusion of David Bowie and Napalm Death, with comparisons to acts like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. In 2021, he ventured into solo territory with the release of his debut EP Psithurism on Kavus Torabiâs Believers Roast label. The project, recorded remotely with drummer and engineer John Simm, showcased Woodmanâs more introspective and melodic side, diverging from Thumpermonkeyâs heavier aesthetic.Building on this momentum, Woodman released his first full-length solo album, Hiss of Today, on April 26, 2025. The album draws inspiration from occult themes and nostalgic hauntology, weaving together analogue synths, lo-fi motorik rhythms, and baroque chamber pop elements. Notably, the track âLychgateâ features guitar work by Kavus Torabi.
