The Memphis Jug Band, active from 1927 to the late 1950s, was formed around Will Shade in Memphis, Tennessee. The band featured a variety of instruments including harmonica, kazoo, fiddle, mandolin or banjolin, guitar, piano, washboard, washtub bass, and jug. They made their first commercial recordings in 1927 for Victor Records. Notable songs include "Stealin', Stealin'", which gained posthumous recognition when covered by the Grateful Dead in 1966. The band's unique sound, blending blues, jazz, and string band flavors, influenced many musicians. They ceased activities in the late 50s as commercial styles shifted toward more urban sounds.
