Bryson Bernard, known professionally as Cupid, was born on October 10, 1982, in Lafayette, Louisiana. Raised in a church environment, he began singing in the choir and later joined the university track team before switching to music, forming the group Fifth Element and eventually launching a solo career. His early releases, including the 2001 single "Do Ya Thing" and the 2002 album Cupid, established his presence in the Gulf Coast R&B scene. The breakthrough came in 2007 with the single "Cupid Shuffle", which reached number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 21 on the Billboard R&B/HipâHop chart, earning doubleâplatinum certification and becoming a global lineâdance staple. That same year he released the album Time for a Change under Atlantic Records, featuring collaborations with TâPain and B.o.B. After parting with Atlantic in 2009, Bryson Bernard continued independently, issuing Feel Good Music (2012), Positopia (2013), Dance Fever (2015), Dance Party King (2016), and Capricorn (2018). He achieved a Guinness World Record for the largest line dance in 2008 and released Capricorn 2 in 2021. In 2024 he launched an international tour, and in 2025 founded the independent label TOC, releasing album The Line Dance King featuring single "Gitty Up," marking a new phase of artistic control and global outreach.
