Biography
Cupid is an American R&B singer who scored a multi-platinum hit in 2007 with the line-dance single "Cupid Shuffle." He was born as "Bryson Bernard" on October 10, 1982, in Lafayette, Louisiana. His father worked as a pastor during Bernard's youth, and Bernard began singing in the church choir, developing a powerful five-octave range along the way. Although he attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on an athletic scholarship, he continued making music, too, releasing the independent single "Do Ya Thang" in 2001 and following it with a full-length album, Cupid, one year later. A second album, The King of Down South R&B, was released independently in 2005. Cupid signed with Atlantic Records and returned in 2007 with his first major-label release, Time For A Change, which peaked at number 58 on the Billboard Top 200. The album's most popular single, "Cupid Shuffle," became a line dance phenomenon as well as a crossover hit, reaching number 19 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, number 66 on the Hot 100, and number 35 on the Billboard Rhythmic chart. Additional singles failed to generate the same level of success, though. Cupid released 2012's Feel Good Music before taking an extended break from the limelight, only to return in 2023 with the hit song "Slow Dance," which reached number 21 on the Top 30 Radio Adult R&B chart. "Ice Cream" followed in early 2024, debuting at number 30 on the same chart.
