Biography
McGuffey Lane, a country rock band from Athens and Columbus, Ohio, United States, was formed in 1972 by Terry Efaw and Steve Reis. The group initially performed under the name Scotch & Soda before adding Bobby E. McNelley as songwriter, lead singer, and guitarist. They rebranded themselves McGuffey Lane, named after Reis's Athens home. The band expanded to a sextet and released their debut self-titled album McGuffey Lane on Paradise Island Records in 1980, which sold over 40,000 copies. This success led to a signing with Atco Records, who reissued the debut that year. McGuffey Lane toured with notable acts such as The Charlie Daniels Band and The Allman Brothers Band. Their follow-up album, Aqua Dream, featured the single "Start It All Over", which peaked at number 97 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1982. The group moved to Atlantic Records for their subsequent albums, Let The Hard Times Roll and Day By Day. However, keyboardist Tebes Douglass died in a car crash during the preparation of Day By Day, and McNelley left the group to pursue a solo career as a songwriter in Nashville. In 1985, Atlantic Records dropped McGuffey Lane. The band released a Christmas album in 1986 but disbanded by 1990. They reunited in 1995 and continued performing locally into the 2000s, releasing two full-length albums post-reunion.
