Matthias Schubert, born on 18â¯Aprilâ¯1960 in Kassel, Germany, is a jazz musician. He began playing oboe and was introduced to jazz under the influence of Allanâ¯Praskin and Melvinâ¯Phillips. From 1979 to 1983, he studied at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre with Andyâ¯Scherrer, Herbâ¯Geller and Walterâ¯Norris, then joined the Euroâ¯Jazzâ¯Band and later the Grahamâ¯Collierâ¯Band. In 1992, he released Dialog with Gunter Hampel, followed by Surface in 2002 with Holger Mantey and Square Down (2011). He also notably played in a quartet with Simonâ¯Nabatov, Lindseyâ¯Horner and Tomâ¯Rainey, and founded the Jamesâ¯Choiceâ¯Orchestra in 2003, which evolved into the Multipleâ¯Joy(ce)â¯Orchestra in 2008. His work earned him the Jazz Prize of Südwestfunk in 1995 and the Hessian Jazz Prize in 2018.
