Biography
Graham Matthew Jay, born 10 October 1978 in Plymouth, England, was an English singerâsongwriter whose early exposure to folk music through his parents shaped his songwriting from the age of fifteen. After moving to Abergavenny at ten, he began performing with his familyâs folk band before signing with EMI imprint Food Records in 1999; his debut EPs Four Songs (2000) and Friendly Fire (2000) garnered critical attention and led to the release of his first single "Let Your Shoulder Fall" in March 2001. In April 2001 the album Draw was issued, from which the singles "Please Don't Send Me Away" and "Call My Name Out" followed, the former peaking at Number eightyâthree on the UK Singles Chart. Graham Matthew Jay supported acts such as Doves, Starsailor, Lowgold, Stereophonics and Dido during the albumâs tour cycle. After parting with Food Records in August 2002, he returned to Abergavenny and later London to pursue audio production studies, but his career was cut short when he died from a fall on 25 September 2003. Post-split, the compilation Matthew Jay: Too Soon (2004) and the album Further Than Tomorrow (2008) were released.
