Biography
Martha Schlamme, born Martha Haftel on September 25, 1923 in Vienna, Austria, was an Austrian-born American singer. She began her musical journey after hearing a concert by Engel Lund while interned as an 'enemy alien' during World War II. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Schlamme released several albums including German Folk - Songs (1954) with Pete Seeger and Sings Songs of Many Lands (1958). Her career took a significant turn in 1959 when she began performing songs by Kurt Weill. This led to the release of notable albums such as The World of Kurt Weill in Song (1962) and Kissin's No Sin (1963). She also acted on stage and television, appearing in productions like Mahagonny, Fiddler on the Roof, and TV shows such as Hootenanny. Schlamme suffered a stroke during a performance at Chautauqua Amphitheater in August 1985 and passed away two months later on October 6, 1985.
