Mariem Mint Hassan, born in May 1958 in Uad Tazua, Western Sahara, was a Sahrawi singer and lyricist. Raised in a nomadic family with a strong musical tradition, she began her career in 1976 as part of the group Shahid El Hafed Buyema, who later became Shahid El Uali. Her solo journey started in 1998 with contributions to Sahrauis: The Music of the Western Sahara. Her debut solo album, Deseos, was released in 2005 and featured the notable "La Tumchu anni". In 2010, she released Shouka ("The Thorn"), which included a response to Felipe González's speech at the Sahrawi refugee camps. Her final album, El Aaiun Egdat, reached number one on the World Music Charts Europe in July 2012. She performed at various festivals, including WOMAD and WOMEX. She died of bone cancer on 22 August 2015, in the Sahrawi refugee camps of Tindouf province, Algeria.
