Marie Leonhardt-Amsler, born on November 6, 1928 in Lausanne, Switzerland, was a violinist who grew up in a musically inclined family. She began her studies with Michel Schwalbé at the conservatory of Geneva and later studied under Walter Kägi at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. In 1954, she married Gustav Leonhardt, a claveciniste, and they moved to Vienna where they started their recording career with works by Henry Purcell featuring Alfred Deller. Marie Leonhardt was a founding member of the Leonhardt-Consort and served as the first violinist in both this ensemble and Musica Antiqua Amsterdam under Ton Koopman. She also taught at various institutions, including the conservatory of Rotterdam and gave masterclasses worldwide. Notable ensembles she led include the Ensemble Baroque de Mateus, which performed at festivals across Europe and Asia. Marie Leonhardt passed away on July 23, 2022.
