Biography
Igor Kipnis (1930â2002) was a German-born American harpsichordist, pianist, and conductor born in Berlin. The son of bass Alexander Kipnis, he moved to the United States in 1938 and later received a B.A. from Harvard University. Kipnis made his concert debut in New York in 1959. He performed as a soloist with ensembles including the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. In 1969, he performed at the Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park. His career included hosting the radio program The Age of Baroque and presenting the concert series The Light and Lively Harpsichord. Kipnis received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1993. His discography of 106 albums includes The Spanish Harpsichord and The Virtuoso Scarlatti. Kipnis died on January 23, 2002, in Redding, Connecticut.
