Biography

Richard Gwilt is a British violinist, composer, and publisher born in 1958 in Edinburgh. He studied at the University of Birmingham under Orrea Pernel and John Joubert before continuing his education at the University of Michigan, where he focused on the Baroque violin. Gwilt returned to England in 1983 and joined the historical performance practice movement. He performed with ensembles including the Academy of Ancient Music, The English Concert, and the London Classical Players. In 1984, he became a member of the group London Baroque, with whom he performed in international concert halls and contributed to more than thirty recordings. Gwilt co-founded the ensemble Arcomelos with Irmgard Schaller in 1999. His professional career included professorships at the Trinity College of Music and the Musikhochschule Köln. He established the publishing venture RG Editions in 1996, focusing on string works from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
