Biography
Margaret Barry, born Margaret Cleary in Cork, Ireland on January 1, 1917, was a traditional singer and banjo player. She taught herself to play the zither banjo and fiddle at a young age. At 16, she began performing as a street musician after leaving home due to a family disagreement. In the early 1950s, Barry moved to London to appear on The Songhunter, a TV series produced by David Attenborough. She became well-known on the London folk scene in the 1950s, frequently accompanied by fiddler Michael Gorman. Her notable albums include Her Mantle So Green (1965) and Ireland's Own (1976). Barry performed at Carnegie Hall and Rockefeller Centre in New York. One of her most recognized songs is "She Moved Through the Fair". She passed away in 1989.
