Biography

Mexican singer, ballerina, flamenco dancer, and actress Maria José was born María José Loyola Anaya on January 12, 1976, in Mexico City. She started her music career as a member of the group Kabah, which formed in 1992. When Kabah disbanded in 2005, María José embarked on a solo career, releasing her eponymous studio debut in 2007 on the Warner Music label. The album, which included the singles "Quien Eres Tú?," "Me Equivoqué," and "Donde Está?," reached number 84 on the Mexican Albums Chart. She was also the support act for Gwen Stefani's tour of Mexico in 2007. In 2009, she promoted the release of her second album with a performance on stage of the previously unreleased single "No Soy una Señora" as the opening act for Rihanna's tour of Mexico. The album Amante de Lo Ajeno, consisting of cover versions of popular 1980s songs by artists such as Daniela Romo and Lucia Méndez, reached number 2 on the Mexican Album Charts. The singles "Mi Amor, Amor" and "Adelante Corazón" were also released in 2009 but it was the single "No Soy una Señora," originally recorded by Melissa, that proved most popular, topping the Mexican Singles Chart. Also included in the album was the duet "Cosas Del Amor" with Edith Marquéz, which also appeared on Marquéz's album Frente a Frente in 2010. María José's third album Amante de lo Bueno (2010), another selection of cover versions from the 1980s, reached number 1 in Mexico. Throughout 2011 and 2012, she was a judge on the Mexican TV show Pequeños Gigantes. Her second album of original songs, De Noche was released in 2012 and reached number 3 on the local charts thanks to chart-topping singles like "El Amor Manda" and "Prefiero Ser Su Amante." In 2016, María José returned with the album Habla Ahora, her third batch of original songs. The LP reached number 3 in Mexico and contained the Top 5 entry "Las Que Se Ponen Bien la Falda" with Ivy Queen. Conexión, her first live album, came out in 2019 and included the singles "Tengo Hábito de Ti," a duet with Vanesa Martin, and "Lo Que Tenías Conmigo." It was followed by Libertad, her sixth studio effort, in 2023.
