Biography

Mantronix is an American hip hop band formed in 1984 by DJ Kurtis Mantronik and rapper MC Tee. The duo, consisting of Jamaican-American émigré Kurtis el Khaleel and Haitian-born Touré Embden, began their musical journey when they met at Downtown Records in Manhattan. Their debut single "Fresh Is the Word" became a club hit in 1985, reaching number 16 on Billboard Magazine's Hot Dance Singles Sales chart and was featured on their debut album The Album. The group signed with Sleeping Bag Records and released several influential albums including Music Madness (1986) and In Full Effect (1988), which reached number 18 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Mantronix's music, characterized by its blend of old school hip hop, electronic, and club music, influenced numerous artists including Beck and The Beastie Boys. Following MC Tee’s departure in 1988 to enlist in the United States Air Force, Mantronik continued with new members Bryce "Luvah" Wilson and DJ D., releasing The Incredible Sound Machine (1991). Despite its commercial disappointment, the album featured collaborations with Angie Stone. The group disbanded shortly after a European tour promoting the release. Kurtis Mantronik later resurfaced in Europe producing house- and techno-music artists.
