Biography

Estelle "Mama" Yancey, born Estella Harris on January 1, 1896 in Cairo, Illinois, was an American blues singer and pianist. She grew up in Chicago, where she sang in church choirs and learned to play the guitar. In 1925, she married Jimmy Yancey, a vaudeville dancer. The couple performed together at informal gatherings and house parties in the 1940s. After Jimmy Yancey's death in 1951, Estelle continued her career, collaborating with various pianists and releasing notable albums such as Jimmy and Mama Yancey: Chicago Piano, Vol. 1 (Atlantic Records, 1952), which includes "Make Me a Pallet On The Floor" and "Four O'Clock Blues." She was nominated multiple times for Blues Music Awards as Traditional Blues Female Artist. Yancey passed away on April 19, 1986, in Chicago at the age of 90.
