Biography

One of the figureheads of the Rock en tu Idioma movement, Mexican rockers Maldita Vecindad y Los Hijos del Quinto Patio formed in Mexico City in 1985. Originally, their lineup consisted of Rolando “Roco” Ortega (vocals), Adrian “Lobito” Navarro Maycote (percussion), Aldo Acuña (bass), José Luis “Pacho” Paredes (drums), and Arturo “Tiki” Reyes Hagen (guitar). They made their debut in 1988 with a self-titled LP that garnered praise for its eclectic combination of rock, ska, and reggae with traditional Mexican genres such as danzón and bolero. More success followed in 1991 with El Circo, which was instantly hailed as a classic rock en español album upon its release. El Circo sold over 800,000 copies in their native Mexico and included the smash hits “Pachuco” and “Kumbala,” two songs that would go on to become staples of the band’s repertoire. Their sophomore effort’s success continued with a US tour, in which they shared the stage with the likes of INXS, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Sonic Youth, Madness, Faith No More, and Jane's Addiction. After issuing the live album En Vivo: Gira Pata de Perro in 1993, Maldita Vecindad y Los Hijos del Quinto Patio returned in 1996 with Baile de Máscaras, followed by Mostros two years later. In the early aughts, the band stayed active through a series of collaborations with other artists and released the full-length Circular Colectivo in 2009.
