Biography

Control Machete was formed in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, in 1995 by scratcher and keyboardist DJ Toy Selectah, vocalist Pato Machete, and vocalist Fermín IV. The trio quickly gained attention with their debut album Mucho Barato, released in February 1997 after legal delays, featuring the breakthrough single "Comprendes Mendes?" which propelled the group into mainstream Latin hip‑hop and positioned them among the Top 50 Spanish‑language rappers according to Rolling Stone. In 1999 they released Artillería Pesada presenta…, which included the hit "Sí Señor" and earned a nomination for Best Rock Song at the 2000 Latin Grammy Awards. The group toured extensively across the United States, Latin America, and Europe, sharing stages with international acts such as The Roots and local groups like Violadores del Verso. They contributed to various tribute compilations, including Un Tributo (1998) and Soda Stereo (2001). In 2001 Fermín IV left the group to pursue a Christian music career and later became a pastor. Control Machete entered an indefinite hiatus in 2004, with intermittent solo projects by Pato Machete and DJ Toy Selectah.
