Biography

Mauri Antero Numminen is a Finnish artist born on March 12, 1940, in Somero. In the 1960s, he performed as an avant-garde artist with tracks including “Nuoren aviomiehen on syytä muistaa” and “Naiseni kanssa eduskuntatalon puistossa”. He co-founded the record label Eteenpäin! in 1966. Numminen established the jazz ensemble Uusrahvaanomainen Jatsiorkesteri in 1970. He performed in the 1973 film Herra Huu – Jestapa Jepulis, Penikat Sipuliks and the 1977 television series Jänikset maailmankartalle. His discography included the album The Tractatus Suite (1989), setting Ludwig Wittgenstein's writings to music, and the children's recording Gommin ja Pommin metsäkarnevaali (1995). He was the subject of the compilation Dägä Dägä Finnwelten (2001). Numminen received honorary doctorates from Åbo Akademi University and the University of Helsinki. He was elected to the Finnish Music Hall of Fame in 2024.
