Biography

The Magic Band was an American rock ensemble from Lancaster established in 1964. They achieved professional recognition for a musical style characterized by experimental rock and blues-rock and for serving as the backing band for the musician Captain Beefheart. The ensemble was founded by the musician Alex St. Clair and the vocalist Don Van Vliet. Their recording career began with the single "Diddy Wah Diddy" (1966) released on the label A&M Records. The Magic Band achieved professional recognition for the debut studio recording Safe as Milk (1967) released on the label Buddah Records. The recording featured collaborations with the musician Ry Cooder and the musician Taj Mahal. Their discography included the studio recording Trout Mask Replica (1969), the studio recording Clear Spot (1972), and the studio recording Ice Cream for Crow (1982). The ensemble achieved professional recognition for the extended play The Legendary A&M Sessions (1987). The group became inactive in 1982 but resumed activity without Vliet in 2003. They achieved professional recognition for performing at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival and releasing the studio recording Back to the Front (2003). The ensemble became inactive in 2017. Vliet died in 2010.
