Biography

The United States of America was an experimental rock ensemble formed in 1967 in Los Angeles. The initial lineup consisted of Joseph Byrd, Dorothy Moskowitz, Gordon Marron, Rand Forbes, and Craig Woodson. Ed Bogas later joined the group as a contributor. The band used electronic instruments constructed by Richard Durrett. Its self-titled studio album appeared in 1968 through Columbia Records and featured the recordings “Hard Coming Love” and “Cloud Song”. The album reached cult status despite limited marketing from the label. The ensemble's only tour was affected by technical failures and legal arrests, leading the group to become inactive in 1969. Byrd later released the album The American Metaphysical Circus (1969) with the ensemble Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies. Byrd died in 2025.
