Biography

Lu Watters and The Yerba Buena Jazz Band was an American traditional jazz revival band founded in 1940 by cornetist Lu Watters. Based in San Francisco, California, the group began performing at Sweet's Ballroom in Oakland before officially forming under the name Yerba Buena Jazz Band in 1939. They gained significant traction at the Dawn Club in San Francisco, where they revived the New Orleans jazz style of King Oliver. The band went on hiatus during World War II but reunited post-war and continued to perform at venues like Hambone Kelly's in El Cerrito, California. Throughout their career, Lu Watters and The Yerba Buena Jazz Band recorded for several labels including Jazz Man Records and West Coast Records.
