Louie and the Lovers was a American rock band from Salinas, California, formed in the early 1970s. The group consisted of vocalist and guitarist Louie Ortega, guitarist Frank Paredes, bassist Steve Vargas, and drummer Albert Parra. Their musical style blended country, rock, and pop influences with their Mexican cultural heritage. In 1970, the ensemble was discovered by Doug Sahm, who secured them a record deal with Epic Records. They released their debut studio album, Rise (1970), which featured the single âI Know You Knowâ (1970). Despite receiving critical praise from the writer Greil Marcus in Rolling Stone, the record saw limited commercial success. In 1972, they released a final single for Epic titled âLittle Georgie Bakerâ (1972). They later recorded a second album in Miami, but the master tapes were lost in a fire and the project was never issued. The band disbanded shortly after. Ortega later won a Grammy Award in 1990 for his work with the Texas Tornados.
