Biography
Los Super Reyes were formed in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 2007 by keyboardist, songwriter, and producer Cruz MartÃnez following the breakup of Kumbia Kings. MartÃnez retained several musicians and vocalists from the former group and signed the new 12-member ensemble to Warner Music Latina. Their debut album, El Regreso de los Reyes, arrived later that year, combining Mexican cumbia with Latin pop, R&B, hip-hop, reggaeton, and electronic production. Its lead single, âMuévelo,â reached number 11 on Billboardâs Hot Latin Songs chart, while the album climbed to number three on Top Latin Albums and number one on Regional Mexican Albums. The record also included âSerenata (Estrellita MÃa),â âMuchacha Tristeâ featuring Dax âEl Coyote,â âOye Mi Amorâ featuring Magic Juan, and âYo Seré.â Los Super Reyes opened the 2007 Premios Juventud ceremony and received a Premio Lo Nuestro nomination in 2008, although lead vocalist Nando DomÃnguez subsequently left following a financial disagreement with MartÃnez. The group returned in 2009 with Cumbia con Soul, which incorporated bachata, techno, pop-R&B, and English-language material into its cumbia foundation. The album reached number 16 on Top Latin Albums and number eight on Regional Mexican Albums, while âEresâ peaked at number 22 on Hot Latin Songs. Later that year, MartÃnez reconciled with A.B. Quintanilla, and Los Super Reyes joined Kumbia All Starz and several former members for a temporary Kumbia Kings reunion. After performing separate sets in Mexico City, the musicians reunited onstage for a closing selection of Kumbia Kings songs. Further concerts and a possible joint album were discussed for 2010, but the proposed reunion tour and recording project never materialized. Los Super Reyes therefore remained a separate act, although their main recording period effectively ended around that time.
