Although hailing from Canada, Los Del Mar enjoyed a quick flash of global popularity during the mid-'90s, thanks to a diverse sound influenced by Andalusian folk music, Latin dance-pop, and techno. The group's biggest hit was a cover of the Spanish dance song "Macarena." Originally released in 1995, Los Del Mar's version of "Macarena" found bandmates Joe La Greca and Pedro Castaño partnering with guest vocalist Wil Veloz. After becoming a Top 40 radio hit in Canada, the song was rerecorded and reissued in 1996, this time with Castaño handling the lead vocals. This new version climbed to Number 2 in Australia, Number 4 in France, and Number 19 on the Eurochart Hot 100, although it failed to match the chart success of the Bayside Boys' wildly popular "Maracena" remix, which became one of the longest-running Number 1 hits in North American history. Los Del Mar released an international debut album, Viva Evita, in late 1996, showcasing the same blend of traditional Spanish music and modern-day dance trends that had made "Macarena" a hit. After that, the group quietly faded from the spotlight, with Castaño continuing to tour as Los Del Mar's main member.
