Biography

The Lijadu Sisters, identical twins Kehinde and Taiwo Lijadu, were born on October 22, 1948, in Ibadan, Nigeria. Inspired by artists such as Aretha Franklin and Miriam Makeba, they began their musical journey with guidance from producer Lemmy Jackson. Their first single, "Jikele- Maweni / Iya Mi Jowo", was released in 1969 after winning a record contract with Decca Records. The duo gained prominence in the Nigerian music scene throughout the 1970s and 1980s, releasing notable albums such as Danger (1976), Mother Africa (1977), and Sunshine (1978). They performed at significant events like the 1972 Munich Olympic Games with Ginger Baker's band Salt. The sisters also found modest success in the United States and Europe, performing with various artists including King Sunny Adé. Kehinde Lijadu passed away on November 9, 2019, following a stroke.
