Michael Wells, known professionally as Lightnin' Wells, was born in West Virginia and raised primarily in North Carolina. He discovered Piedmont blues and old-time music after moving to Goldsboro, North Carolina in 1962. Wells joined his first band, the Unknowns, at age thirteen, playing harmonica. By the late 1960s, he had learned guitar and began studying artists like Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie. His debut solo recording was Bull Frog Blues (1995), followed by Ragtime Millionaire (1998). Wells joined Music Maker in 1996 and released his next album, Ragged But Right, on that label in 2002. He served on the board of directors at the Music Maker Relief Foundation for ten years. Throughout his career, Wells has performed at numerous festivals including the Chicago Blues Festival (2000) and the Bull Durham Blues Festival.
