Leon Lee Dorsey, born on March 12, 1958, is an American jazz bassist, composer, arranger, and producer. Raised in a family deeply rooted in Pittsburghâs jazz tradition, Dorsey began playing instruments at an early age, starting with the piano and cello before joining the Pittsburgh Symphony. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Oberlin College, becoming the first to receive a B.M. in classical Double Bass and Jazz Performance. Dorsey's debut album, The Watcher, was released in 1995 under Landmark Records. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with numerous jazz icons, including Lionel Hampton, Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, Dizzy Gillespie, and Wynton Marsalis. He has also performed with Frank Sinatra at Carnegie Hall. His subsequent albums include Song of Songs (1999), Freedom Jazz Dance (2021), and A Letter to Bill Evans (2024). Dorsey is also an educator, teaching at the Berklee School of Music in Boston.
