Biography
Leipziger Streichquartett is a German string quartet founded in 1988 in Leipzig. Originally known as the New Leipzig String Quartet until 1995, three of the members were principal players in the Gewandhaus Orchestra until they decided to focus exclusively on chamber music in 1993. They studied under Gerhard Bosse and the Amadeus Quartet before launching their own concert series, Pro Quatuor, in 1991. In 1996, the ensemble initiated the Beethoven String Quartet Cycle, which brought together over fifteen European cities. They completed a complete recording of the string quartets of Franz Schubert (1997) across nine discs. The quartet has visited more than 60 countries across five continents and has released over 60 recordings primarily with the label Dabringhaus & Grimm. They have received multiple awards including the Diapason d'Or and the Echo Klassik in 1999, 2000, 2003, 2008, and 2012. Collaborations include performances with Alfred Brendel and Giora Feidman.
