Biography

Born in Helsinki on December 13, 1977, Lauri Porra is a multidisciplinary Finnish musician, best known for his participation in the metal band Stratovarius. He began studying music and cello at the age of six, before going on to learn drums, piano, double bass, trumpet and singing. He studied at the Helsinki Conservatory from 1994 to 2004, and also sang in the YL men's choir. In 2005, he joined the metal band Stratovarius, where he has been bassist ever since. He also pursues a solo career combining progressive neo-rock, minimalist music, orchestral music and screen composition. His untitled debut album, released in 2005, was followed by All Children Have Superpowers (2007), Flyover (2015) and Entropia (2018), recorded with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jaakko Kuusisto. In 2019, Dust marked a return to instrumental rock, while the following album, Aineen ja ajan messu (2024), a cross between classical minimalist music, ambient and post-rock, is also known as Matter and Time. Lauri Porra also composed the soundtracks for the films Stromskerry Maja (2024) and Queen of Fucking Everything (2025). In 2025, the album Seasons in Moominvalley was released, combining chamber music with piano and electronic strings.
