Lawrence Joseph Elgart, known as Larry Elgart, was born on March 20, 1922, in New London, Connecticut. He began his musical journey playing saxophone with various jazz musicians, including Charlie Spivak and Woody Herman. In the mid-1940s, he formed a band with his brother Les Elgart. The group later disbanded but the brothers reunited in the early 1950s to record "Bandstand Boogie" for American Bandstand, which became the show's theme song. Their first LP, Sophisticated Swing, was released in 1955 under the name Les Elgart and His Orchestra. Larry and Les split again in 1959, with Larry signing with RCA Victor. In 1982, Larry and his Manhattan Swing Orchestra achieved significant chart success with "Hooked on Swing", which reached number 31 on Billboard Pop Singles and number 20 on Adult Contemporary charts. He continued touring and recording until the early 2000s. Elgart passed away on August 29, 2017, in Sarasota, Florida.
