Biography

La Vela Puerca is a Uruguayan rock band formed in Montevideo in December 1995, first appearing under that name at a street party on December 24 of that year. The group grew around Sebastián Teysera (lead vocals, songs), Sebastián Cebreiro (vocals), Nicolás Lieutier (bass), Rafael Di Bello and Santiago Butler (guitars), and Carlos Quijano (sax), later adding Alejandro Picone on trumpet and José Canedo on drums, with Diego Méndez as a touring keyboardist. A 1996 band contest gave them studio time that helped lead to the debut album Deskarado in 1997, and from there they became one of the key rock bands to emerge from Uruguay, building their catalog through De Bichos y Flores in 2001, A Contraluz in 2004, El Impulso in 2007, Piel y Hueso in 2011, Érase in 2014, and Destilar in 2018. Their later work included the 2022 studio album Discopático, which brought in guests such as Arquero, Andrea Echeverri, and Tito Fuentes, and kept their mix of rock, ska, punk, and Latin American songcraft intact. In 2024 they revisited one of their best-known records with the live set Vivo A Contraluz (2004-2024). By 2025, the band was marking its 30th anniversary with a special tour, a podcast called Tenemos Jardín, and a year framed around both celebration and retrospective work.
