Biography

Kuami Mensah Gnonnas, born in 1971 in Cotonou, Benin, grew up in a highly artistic environment. The son of Gnonnas Pedro, a salsa singer, musician and member of the Africando group, music played a key role in the family and inevitably influenced young Kuami. Determined to play his part in this milieu, he fears the label of "son of" and renames himself professionally Kuami Mensah. In 2004, he unveiled his first album, Novi Novi, on which the salsa of his childhood gave way to a style he himself defined as "Afro-Latin-reggae". His second album, released only in 2010, uses this term to define his style: salsa percussion, reggae rhythms and the influence of Afro-funk. Having built his own musical identity, Kuami Mensah, who now lives in Valencia, Spain, returns to the influence of his father by dedicating his third album, Minon M'Zon, to him in 2014. While his inventiveness took him to numerous concerts, Kuami Mensah died suddenly in 2021, back in Cotonou, Benin, after being diagnosed with an illness.
