Biography

Canadian synth-pop group Kon Kan, was formed in 1988 by Barry Harris in Toronto, Ontario. The project began as a solo endeavor by Harris, who conceived the name "Kon Kan" as a play on the term "Can Con," referencing Canadian radio regulations that mandate airplay for domestic artists. The group's breakthrough came with their debut single "I Beg Your Pardon" (1989), which sampled various hits and was inspired by trips to Portugal. This track, along with others like "Harry Houdini", "Move to Move", and "Puss N' Boots/These Boots Are Made for Walkin'", were featured on their debut album Move to Move (1989). The album charted on the RPM Top 100 Albums list. Kon Kan won a Juno Award in 1990 for "I Beg Your Pardon" and was nominated for another in 1991 for "Puss N' Boots/These Boots Are Made for Walkin'". Following the release of Syntonic (1990), Kon Kan was dropped from Atlantic Records. Harris resumed songwriting duties with Bob Mitchell for their next album, Vida!... (1993). The band expanded to a four-piece and included covers like David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream". In 2020, Vida!... was released digitally worldwide with additional remixes. Kon Kan briefly reunited in 2013 but disbanded again the following year. Barry Harris announced a new touring lineup for 2023/24, featuring himself and new band members.
