Biography

Klymaxx, an American all-female pop/R&B band from Los Angeles, California, were formed in 1979 by Bernadette Cooper. The original lineup included Lorena "Lungs" Porter Shelby, Cheryl Cooley, Robbin Grider, and Lynn Malsby, with Joyce "Fenderella" Irby joining later. Klymaxx's debut album Never Underestimate the Power of a Woman was released in 1981, followed by Girls Will Be Girls in 1982. Their breakthrough came with the 1984 release of Meeting in the Ladies Room, which featured the top five US Billboard R&B chart success "The Men All Pause", and the title track. The band's self-produced "I Miss You", written by Lynn Malsby, became their pop breakthrough, peaking at number five on the Hot 100. Klymaxx's distinctive sound was characterised by Lorena Shelby's vocals and Bernadette Cooper's spoken word style. The original lineup went their separate ways in 1989, but several members reunited intermittently over the next five years to release additional albums. In 2004, five of the six original members reunited for a VH1 episode of Bands Reunited, and in 2009, all six participated in the TV One series Unsung. In June 2021, Klymaxx were inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame.
