Biography
Kleeer was an American funk band from New York, formed in 1972 under the leadership of Woodrow "Woody" Cunningham. Initially serving as a backing band for The Choice Four, Kleeer consisted of Cunningham on lead vocals and drums, Paul Crutchfield on percussion and keyboards, Norman Durham on bass, and Richard Lee on guitar. After separating from The Choice Four in 1974, the group underwent several name changes, including The Jam Band and Pipeline, before settling on Kleeer in 1978. Kleeer's breakthrough came with the release of "Keep Your Body Workin'", which was included on a compilation by Atlantic Records. The positive response from DJs led to a recording contract with Atlantic, resulting in seven studio albums between 1979 and 1985. Notable releases include Winners (1979), featuring the hit single "Tonightâs the Night (Good Time)", and License To Dream (1981), which included "Get Tough". The band achieved significant chart success with hits like "Winners" (1980) and "Get Tough" (1981). After releasing their final album, Seeekret, in 1985, Kleeer disbanded. Cunningham pursued a solo career in the 2000s before his death in January 2010. Durham passed away in November 2011 due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The band's music has been compiled on various releases, including The Very Best of Kleeer (1998).
