Biography
Instant Funk was an American disco and funk band formed in 1975. The group initially signed with Philadelphia Records and released their debut single "Float Like a Butterfly" in 1975, followed by their first album Get Down with the Philly Jump the next year. In 1977, they achieved their first notable success with "It Ainât Reggae But Itâs Funky", which gained traction in the American disco charts. The band also provided background vocals for Bunny Sigler during this period. In 1978, Instant Funk moved to Salsoul Records, where they released their breakthrough hit "Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl)". This single reached number 20 on the U.S. pop charts and topped both the R&B and disco charts, earning a gold certification for the band. The song also achieved international success, charting in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK. Their self-titled second album Instant Funk (1979) was also certified gold. Between 1979 and 1983, Instant Funk had nine hits on the U.S. R&B charts, including "Witch Doctor" and "No Stoppinâ that Rockinâ", both of which reached the Top 40. The band disbanded in 1985 following the release of their final album for Salsoul Records, 1983's Kinky.
