Biography
Kitka Womenâs Vocal Ensemble is an all-female professional vocal group based in Oakland, California, focused on Eastern European womenâs traditions. Founded in 1979 as an offshoot of the Westwind International Folk Group, the group specializes in Balkan, Slavic, and Caucasian vocal styling. Under the direction of Bon Singer from 1981 to 1996, they transitioned into a professional group. Since 1997, the group has been co-directed by Shira Cion, Janet Kutulas, and Juliana Graffagna. The group released its self-titled debut album, Kitka, in 1989, followed by Voices on the Eastern Wind (1992) and Sacred Voices, Sacred Sounds (1995). Other notable works include Nectar (1999), The Vine (2002), Wintersongs (2003), and The Rusalka Cycle: Songs between the Worlds (2006). In 2008, the group released Sanctuary: A Cathedral Concert. The group has received recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chorus America, and the American Choral Directorsâ Association. Its name is derived from the Bulgarian and Macedonian word for "bouquet".
