Biography
Kirk Nurock, born February 28, 1948, in Camden, New Jersey, is an American pianist and composer. At 16, he received the first Duke Ellington Scholarship from the Eastman School of Music. Nurock studied composition at Juilliard and jazz with Johnny Richards, Rayburn Wright, and Manny Albam. His debut album Kirk Nurock was released in 1976. Nurock was also known for integrating animal sounds into compositions like "The Bronx Zoo Events" (1980) and "Sonata for Piano and Dog" (1983). He also composed ballet music and formed the duo Theo & Kirk with Theo Bleckmann in 1990. Nurock taught jazz composition at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1993 to 1998, then returned to New York to teach at The New School. Other notable works include Remembering Tree Friends (1998) and contributing to Bobby Previte's 23 Constellations of Joan Miró (2001).
