Kira Roessler was born on June 12, 1961, in New Haven, Connecticut, and became one of the defining bassists of American punk and underground rock. After moving to California, she entered the Los Angeles punk scene as a teenager, playing in early bands including Waxx, the Visitors, the Monsters, Sexsick, and Twisted Roots, the latter with Pat Smear. In 1983, while studying applied engineering at UCLA, she joined Black Flag after Chuck Dukowskiâs departure, bringing a sharper and more flexible bass style to one of hardcoreâs most intense periods. Her playing appears on key mid-1980s Black Flag releases including Slip It In, Live â84, Loose Nut, The Process of Weeding Out, In My Head, and Whoâs Got the 10½? After leaving the band in 1985, Kira Roessler formed dos with Minutemen and fIREHOSE bassist Mike Watt, building an unusual two-bass project heard on dos in 1986, numero dos in 1989, Justamente Tres in 1996, and dos y dos in 2011. She also worked as a dialogue editor in film and television, winning Emmys for John Adams and Game of Thrones and contributing to the Oscar-winning sound team for Mad Max: Fury Road. In 2018, she joined Devra Hoff in the twin-bass duo AwkWard for In Progress. Kira Roessler released her self-titled solo debut Kira in 2021 through Kitten Robot Records, turning toward sparse, bass-led songs shaped by loss, space, and quiet tension. In 2026, she prepared her second solo album, Enigma, for Org Music, co-producing it with her brother Paul Roessler and featuring backing vocals from Petra Haden on a set led by âHow Could Youâ and âYou Will Feel My Pain.â
