Kaâikena Scanlan is a Hawaiian-language educator and musician from Kailua, OÊ»ahu who relocated to HawaiÊ»i Island in 2010 to study Ê»Ålelo HawaiÊ»i at the University of HawaiÊ»i at Hilo, graduating with a B.A. in Hawaiian Studies in 2015. Alongside teaching (including Hawaiian Ethnobotany) and continuing graduate studies in Hawaiian Language and Literature, he also worked at Kaunamano Farm in HonokaÊ»a, a side of his life that shaped his public profile as a farmer-kumu who tied cultural practice to everyday work. In music, he wrote and performed with the reggae band These Guys and began releasing his own material in the mid-2010s, starting with the single âHe Kanakaâ (2016) featuring The Vitals 808. He followed with tracks that leaned into island reggae and local storytelling, including âSmoke All Dayâ (2018) and a run of 2019 releases such as âBrainsâ and âUtu Bang Bang.â His 2021 singles âPerfarmerâ and âÊ»AÊ»aliÊ»iâ kept that blend of humor, pride, and community references, then he continued with later releases including âClichéâ (2022, in a version featuring TheseGuys) and âHawaiÊ»i Alohaâ (2023). In 2024 he appeared on collaborations like âHaka Kau Moaâ (with TheseGuys) and âRoots and Cultureâ (with The Brown Boys), and he extended that collaborative thread into 2026 with âMele O Kahoolaweâ alongside Ikaakamai.
