Biography

Jun Andreas Märkl was born in 1959 in Munich, Germany. He is a conductor who began his musical education at age four, learning piano and violin. He studied piano, violin, and orchestral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover starting in 1978. Märkl's breakthrough came in 1986 when he won the Dirigentenwettbewerb des Deutschen Musikrates. He led the Orchestre national de Lyon from 2005 to 2011, and the MDR-Sinfonieorchester in Leipzig from 2007 to 2012. Märkl has collaborated with leading orchestras worldwide, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has released over 50 recordings, notably the complete orchestral works of Debussy with the Orchestre national de Lyon. In 2012, he was awarded Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres for his work in Lyon and his Debussy recordings.
