Biography

Utah Symphony, an American orchestra based in Salt Lake City, Utah, was formed during the Great Depression as part of the Federal Music Project. The orchestra's origins trace back to 1940, when it was established as the Utah State Symphony Orchestra by local enthusiasts following the dissolution of previous attempts at creating a symphony in the region. Under the direction of Maurice Abravanel from 1947, the ensemble grew into a full-time orchestra and gained national recognition through extensive touring and recording with Vanguard Records and Vox Records. Notable recordings include complete symphony cycles of Mahler and Tchaikovsky. The Utah Symphony moved into its dedicated concert venue, Symphony Hall (later renamed Abravanel Hall), in 1979. Successors to Abravanel included Varujan Kojian, Joseph Silverstein, Keith Lockhart, and Thierry Fischer, who served as music director from 2009 until his contract concluded in August 2023. The orchestra has continued its commitment to contemporary American music, commissioning works such as EOS (Goddess of the Dawn) by Augusta Read Thomas and Switch by Andrew Norman.
