Biography
Born in France on March 2, 1970, Julien Lourau is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. The son of sociologist René Lourau, he made his musical debut as a member of the group Trash Corporation. Soon after leaving that group, he founded Groove Gang and released his first album, Groove Gang, in 1995. The group released one more album â City Boom Boom (1998) â before he began recording as a solo artist. His first release as a solo artist was 2000âs Gambit, which found the musician embracing electro music. He returned to a more refined acoustic sound on 2001âs The Rise before allowing his experimental side to dictate the direction of Fire & Forget (2005). He changed course again for 2007âs Afro-Cuban- influenced album Julien Lourau vs. Rumbabierta. Julien Lourau formed the group Quartet Saigon and released an album by the same name in 2009. In 2015, he reunited with his old Trash Corporation bandmate Bojan Z (piano) and released the album Duo (2015). In 2021, he paid homage to the influential jazz label CTI with the album Power of Soul â The Music of CTI.
