Originally meeting in their native Dublin, Ireland, Danny O'Donoghue and Mark Sheehan became members of the four-piece group MyTown in 1996. The band achieved some success in the UK and Ireland but struggled amid the growing number of boy bands entering the market. O'Donoghue and Sheehan's songwriting partnership had already attracted attention, however, and after MyTown dissolved, the pair travelled to Canada and the US to work with producers and artists including Teddy Riley and Montell Jordan. Several years later, they returned to Dublin, recruited drummer Glen Power, and began writing together as The Script, releasing their first tracks online in 2005. Debut single âWe Cryâ arrived in 2008, reaching the Top 20 in the UK and Top 10 in Ireland, before âThe Man Who Can't Be Movedâ peaked at number 2 in the UK, Ireland, and Denmark. Their self-titled debut album subsequently entered the UK Albums Chart at number 1 and eventually sold more than 600,000 copies. âBreakevenâ became another international hit and their first US single in 2010. Second album Science & Faith followed that year, led by the Irish number 1 âFor the First Time.â The band's third album, #3, arrived in 2012 and included âHall of Fame,â featuring O'Donoghue's fellow The Voice UK judge will.i.am. No Sound Without Silence topped the UK and Irish album charts in 2014, followed after a brief hiatus by Freedom Child in 2017. Sixth album Sunsets & Full Moons appeared in 2019 and included âThe Last Time,â which topped charts in Scotland and Belgium. In 2021, âI Want It Allâ preceded their first best-of collection, Tales from the Script: Greatest Hits, which combined material from their previous albums with the new single and an acoustic track. Tragedy struck on April 14, 2023, when Sheehan died following a brief illness. The group reconvened in 2024, adding longtime touring bassist Ben Sargeant and guitarist Ben Weaver to the lineup and releasing seventh album Satellites, which reached number 1 in Ireland and number 2 in the UK. The record paid tribute to Sheehan on songs including âGoneâ and was supported by an extensive world tour through 2025, as well as a Pyramid Stage appearance at Glastonbury. In 2026, The Script returned with âMan in the Arenaâ and the Oasis-inspired âThe Crowd Was Singing Wonderwall.â Their eighth studio album, The User's Guide to Being Human, was released through BMG on August 14, 2026, ahead of the international Man in the Arena Tour.
