Biography
Johnny Darrell, born on July 23, 1940, in Hopewell, Alabama, was an American country music artist. After serving in the army, he moved to Nashville and managed a Holiday Inn near Music Row. His breakthrough came when producer Kelso Herstin discovered him on Bobby Bareâs recommendation. His first single, "Green Green Grass of Home", was released in 1965, followed by As Long as The Wind Blows in 1966, which reached number 30 and earned Darrell the title Most Promising Male Artist from Cashbox. He introduced several notable songs including "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" and "The Son of Hickory Holler's Tramp", both released in 1967. Darrell was associated with the outlaw country movement in the 1970s and released albums such as Why You Been Gone So Long (1969) and Water Glass Full Of Whiskey (1975). He died on October 7, 1997, in Kennesaw, Georgia.
